is organizing a two-day workshop on

Free and Open Source Software in South-Eastern Europe

The event will be held on 24th and 25th of March in Sofia, Bulgaria
as part of the monthly conferences of Linux for Bulgarians

Main topic: Free and Open Source Software in South-Eastern Europe - what is common and what is different; common problems and their solutions seen from four perspectives: the FLOSS community, the business, e-government with FLOSS, education and training with FLOSS.

The workshop in Sofia is the fourth of the series of workshops held under the FLOSSWORLD project in different cities and countries around the world – Buenos Aires (Argentina), Beijing (China), Mumbai (India).

Participants: The participants in the workshop will be representatives of the free and open source software community, the government, higher educational institutions and the business. The project partners will be represented by FUNDECYT (Spain) involved in the migration of the Spanish province of Extremadura to LinEx, MI2 (Croatia) - hosts SummerSource software camp and have ported the Creative Commons licenses in Croatia, CARNET (Croatia) which is Main academic & research network in Croatia under Science & Tech Ministry.
Among the guest lecturers will be representative of another major EU funded open source software oriented project – TOSSAD - who is going to present the free and open source software in Turkey.

Location: Francophone Center in the University of Sofia

The main topics to be discussed during the workshop are:
  • free and open source software in governments in the region - do the administrations actually use FLOSS and if yes – to which extent?
  • Are government employees trained on FLOSS?
  • What is the policy regarding open standards and FLOSS adoption in the region?
  • FLOSS projects in the region – similarities, differences, significance from the international perspective
  • attitude of the academic community towards FLOSS
  • the business community and the FLOSS community – what kind of skills are required and what kind of skills are developed from participating in open source projects
